Appreciation towards Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya for providing the following description:
Rimini is a popular tourist beach city destination on a beautiful Adriatic coast. Every summer, it has become an idealistic place for mass tourism heading for beaches and nightclubs which are mainly along the coast, therefore the most economic activities are happening only along the coast, which is causing unsustainable tourism and declining natural environment.
Firstly, we studied how urbanizations grow according to the ancient Roman road and the limit of the topography between the slopes and flat areas together with the movement of tourists today. Then the line of direction appeared, containing A-14 motorway and railway which are the most popular ways to get to Rimini from Bologna. By doing the map of the perception on A-14 motorway, inspired by ‘The view from the road’ by Kevin Lynch, helps us to understand that in one part of A-14 motorway before arriving at the exit to Rimini centre is a valuable opportunity to help people who are travelling to Rimini perceiving another kind of important landscape of Rimini which is not only the coast. Driving on this part of the A-14 will take you more or less 15.45 minutes depending on driving speed before arriving at Rimini city centre.
In this part of Rimini is a valley between 2 different characteristic rivers which are Uso and Marecchia river, also is the place where fresh water irrigated from the mountain to the sea in the forms of many small canals. In addition, there are lots of aquifers underground. Therefore, by understanding that this is a territory of water, we proposed to manage to distribute fresh water in the better way for the people uses, defending the salinity pressure and increasing biodiversity. We proposed to recuperate and connect water channels to main 2 rivers and more importantly, proposed a big flooding basin next to Marecchia river where has the most vulnerability. At this point is a proposed new basin is also the intersection of river, green corridors and grey infrastructures like A-14 motorway and railway. So we decided to transform this area to become a new natural door to Rimini.
Focusing on experiences of passengers and drivers using A-14 motorway, we used motorway as a tool for representing the landscape of Rimini by creating small interventions along motorway that give opportunities for people to drive slower to see, or in some points where will able to get off their cars to perceive the landscape of Rimini. In an area where the new flooding basin is, we proposed a rest area for the motorway with services connecting the urban park, historical city, camping area, vineyards and bike routes that which is directly adjacent to the hinterlands. This place could be a new image of the landscape of Rimini.
