Urban SOS, an annual competition presented by AECOM and Van Alen Institute in partnership with 100 Resilient Cities — Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, challenges students around the globe to come together across disciplines to tackle some of our cities’ most pressing issues.

The seventh edition in the series, Fair Share explores how the principles of the “sharing economy” can be applied to support more equitable access to resources, improve the built environment and enrich the quality of life of urban residents.

As digital natives, today’s students are adapting to the sharing economy faster than any other demographic. Fair Share challenges multidisciplinary teams of students to create a new generation of digital innovations combined with physical design strategies to improve how cities provide housing, open space, transportation, jobs, care, and many other services and resources.

Pre-register for more information on the sharing economy and updates on the competition; final proposals are due September 12, 2016. The winning teams take home US$15,000 in prizes. In addition, AECOM will make available up to US$25,000 of cash and in-kind staff time to support the implementation of the winning proposal.

Teams can include up to four members, and must include students from two disciplines at a minimum (such as design, engineering, business, technology, public health, policy studies, economics, sociology, international development, social entrepreneurship or any other relevant fields). You can locate your proposal in any of the cities within the 100 Resilient Cities network. You must be enrolled in a certified program during the 2016-2017 academic year at Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. levels to enter. Juries comprised of thought leaders in five global cities will select competition finalists who will advance to the final round in Los Angeles in January 2017 to present their proposals before an interdisciplinary panel.
