gabinete de arquitectura constructs monumental brick canopy in asunción, paraguay on the outskirts of asunción, paraguay’s capital and largest city, a monumental canopy made from brick and steel has been constructed in the back yard of an existing property. the structure — designed by solano benítez, gloria cabral, solanito benítez of gabinete de arquitectura — forms a versatile space that hovers above a swimming pool at the rear of the plot, while enclosing its own sheltered volumes.
named ‘quincho tía coral’, gabinete de arquitectura’s design measures a total of 160 square meters (1,722 square feet). made from discarded rubble, reused glass, and cement floors, the structure is supported by an inverted V-shaped pillar, whose form references the triangular motifs found throughout the remainder of the scheme. meanwhile, lighting strategically positioned within the canopy allows the pavilion to glow gently at night.
during the day, the pavilion provides much-needed shade from the region’s hot sun. the terrace provides an ideal location for a summer barbecue, with an adjacent pool offering further respite from the warm weather. in a manner similar to that of the huge arch erected at the 2016 venice architecture biennale, gabinete de arquitectura has again brought together humble materials as a way to assert a powerful and profound architectural gesture.
